Edison State College uses the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) as its entry Placement Test. It is used to determine placement in English, mathematics, and reading courses. More information including tips, a study guide, and practice tests, is available on the Edison Website at http://www.edison.edu/assessment/PertStudyGuide.pdf.
Placement Testing Locations & Times
- A student must submit an application for admission prior to testing. Once the application has been processed, the Edison Student ID number and a valid photo ID are required in order to test. Remediation is required prior to retesting.
- Placement testing is required of all degree-seeking students, certificate-seeking students, high school students in Accelerated Programs, and Veterans. Non-degree-seeking students planning to take English, mathematics or foreign languages, must also be tested.
- PERT attempts are limited--See State Rule 6A.10.0315(7)(8) below.
- Dual Enrollment students are required to present the Dual Enrollment Placement Test Referral Form prior to testing.
- A Student who has taken the full set of ACT-E or SAT-R within the past two years may bring a copy of the report to the Testing Center for testing exemption consideration.
- Edison State College accepts the highest test scores from any test or combination of tests. This includes any combination of PERT, ACT, SAT, or FCAT (2.0) scores. The scores are valid for two years.
- A student who has attended another college or university may bring in a copy of their transcript for testing exemption consideration.
- Students whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from a US High School may be required to take an English proficiency test before placement testing is administered. For more information visit the English for Academic Purposes website.
- The PERT placement Test is administered at Edison’s Lee, Collier, and Charlotte campuses and the Hendry Glades Centers. Contact your local campus for additional information.
POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION READINESS TEST (PERT)—It has been the policy of Edison State College to allow for a maximum of two (2) PERT attempts on College Placement Exams. Edison continues this practice in accordance with the Florida State Board of Education Administrative Rule 6A-10.0315(7)(8), allowing for two PERT attempts while a student is enrolled in high school. Two additional PERT attempts are allowed once a student has graduated from high school and has applied to Edison as a degree seeking student.
SITTING FOR THE PERT TEST—Unless a student provides documentation of college-level placement in a specific subtest such as ACT/SAT, and/or FCAT (2.0), the entire PERT will be administered and will count as the student’s first attempt. Second attempts will be considered by individual subtests. The following table provides information on placement into college-level courses.

COLLEGE PREP PLACEMENT — A student who does not achieve the minimum score requirements as outlined in the previous table, will be placed in, and required to satisfactorily complete, appropriate college preparatory instruction. "State Rule 6A-10.0315 (10) mandates that during their first term, full-time students who are registered for at least twelve (12) credits, shall begin competency-based preparatory instruction based on the placement test results. Part-time students shall enroll prior to completing twelve (12) credits."
Remediation is required prior to retesting for the PERT--Pursuant to State Rule 6A-10.0315(9), remediation is required prior to retesting for the PERT. Edison State College requires students to attend a free PERT workshop/session prior to retesting. PERT workshops/sessions are available at all Edison State College locations. Check the links below for scheduled remediation workshops/sessions by campus for Edison College Students.

Dual Enrollment Remediation Requirement—Pursuant to State Rule 6A-10.0315 (9) prior to administering a retest, the test administrator must require documentation from the student that verifies alternative remediation has occurred since prior PERT attempt. High school students that are currently enrolled in a related secondary course in the areas of reading, writing, and/or math are eligible to retest. The Dual Enrollment Placement Test Referral Form must be completed by a school counselor/authorized designee prior to retesting. High school students have a maximum of two (2) attempts on the PERT.
Pursuant to s.1008.30, students who score at Level 2 or Level 3 on the reading portion of the grade 10 FCAT or Level 2, Level 3, or Level 4 on the mathematics portion must have completed the related courses prior to retaking the PERT. Other elective courses may not be substituted for the selected postsecondary reading, mathematics, or writing preparatory course unless the elective course covers the same competencies included in the related aforementioned course.
After the completion of the required preparatory instruction, students will be eligible to retest using the 2nd and final attempt of the PERT prior to graduating from high school. A student must present the
Dual Enrollment Placement Test Referral Form that has been signed by a high school counselor/authorized designee prior to retesting.
