Early College Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is eligible for Early College?

A: Students who meet required minimum test score levels, who have attained a senior-year status with an unweighted, cumulative GPA of 3.0, a *junior-year, sophomore-year or 2nd semester **freshmen-year status with an unweighted, cumulative GPA of 3.5, who have not completed sufficient units to qualify for high school graduation, and who have the recommendation of their high school guidance counselor or home school program educator are admissible to the program.
*Collier County Juniors required 3.0 GPA
** Only Hendry/Glades and Lee counties allow 2nd semester freshmen to participate

Q: What is the difference between Early College and Early Admissions?

A: Early Admissions requires that the qualified student take all of their classes on the Edison State College campus. No academic classes can be taken at the high school. Students are also required to have all college-level test scores and must self-identify as wanting to participate in Early Admissions.

Q: What is the Early College/Early Admission application process?

  • Students should begin by contacting their guidance counselor
  • Students need to submit an Edison State College Application for Admission (paper version only)
  • Students must also present qualifying scores on either the ACT-E, SAT-Reasoning Exam, or the Florida College Entry-Level Placement Test (FCELPT)
  • Students must submit a completed High School Accelerated Registration Approval Form listing the courses for which the student is approved to register
  • Students get form from the guidance counselor; home school educators get form from their Dual Enrollment Contact on any of the Edison campuses
  • Home schooled students must provide proof of enrollment in a home education program pursuant to s.1002.41 of the Florida Statutes

Q: What are the required test scores to participate in Early College or Early Admissions?

A: If a student plans to take a class that requires college reading and writing, the required scores are as follows:
FCELPT: Reading 83 and Sentence Skills 83
ACT-E: English 17 and Reading 18
SAT-R: Critical Reading 440

If a student plans on take College Algebra (MAC 1105), Liberal Arts Math (MGF 1106) or Introductory Statistics (STA 2023), the required scores are as follows:
FCELPT: Elementary Algebra 90
ACT – E: Math 23
SAT- R: Math 540

  • Minimum passing math scores are: FCELPT – 72 Elem Algebra, ACT-E 19, SAT-R 440. These scores place a student into MAT 1033, Intermediate Algebra, a college-level elective course

Q: Can the FCELPT exam be taken more than once?

A: The exam can be taken twice while a student is enrolled in high school. The minimum waiting period is 31 days. Test scores are valid for two years. If a graduating senior elects to continue at Edison to finish a degree, he/she has the option to use current scores for continued placement or to take exam over. The Assessment Center can be contacted for more information regarding this process.

Q: What courses are available for Early College or Early Admission students?

A: Students can take academic, college-level courses and/or career and technical courses. Please see Course Matrix document.

Q: How many credit hours may a student take per semester?

A: Qualified 2nd semester freshmen are allowed up to 6 credit hours, qualified sophomore are allowed up to 9 credit hours, qualified juniors and seniors are allowed up to 15 credit hours.

Q: What is required beyond high school GPA to remain eligible in the program?

A: Students must maintain an Edison cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher to remain eligible. Students that do not meet this criterion are sent a letter notifying them of their academic standing and their options.
